Dr. Moeketsi Joseph Letele was elected President of the African Quality Assurance Network (AfriQAN) at the Network's General Assembly held during the 2026 AfriQAN Conference in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. His election reflects the confidence of the African quality assurance community in his leadership and his longstanding commitment to advancing quality assurance, accreditation, and the development of higher education across the continent. Dr. Letele currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the Council on Higher Education (CHE) in Lesotho, where he provides strategic leadership in promoting quality, accountability, and excellence within the country's higher education system. Throughout his career, he has played a pivotal role in strengthening institutional quality assurance mechanisms, enhancing regulatory frameworks, and supporting continuous improvement in higher education. At the continental level, Dr. Letele serves as an Interim Council Member of the Pan-African Quality Assurance Alliance (PAQAA), contributing to initiatives aimed at strengthening accreditation systems, harmonizing quality assurance frameworks, and advancing academic standards across Africa. He also serves as Executive Secretary of the Southern African Quality Assurance Network (SAQAN), where he promotes regional collaboration among quality assurance agencies and supports the enhancement of higher education quality throughout Southern Africa. With over two decades of professional experience in the education sector, Dr. Letele has held several senior leadership positions spanning basic education, higher education, the private sector, and non-governmental organizations in Lesotho. His extensive leadership experience includes serving as Director of Quality Assurance, Country Director, Rector, and Lecturer at various higher education institutions. Dr. Letele has also made significant contributions to higher education governance through his service on numerous statutory and advisory bodies, including the Examinations Council of Lesotho (ECOL), the National Manpower Development Council (NMDC), and several academic advisory boards. He previously served on the Higher Education Quality Assurance Committee (HEQAC), a statutory committee of the Council on Higher Education, Lesotho. Academically, Dr. Letele holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Business Administration from the University of the Free State, South Africa. He also possesses an impressive multidisciplinary academic background, including master’s degrees in education, Financial Management, and Business Administration (International Business), a Postgraduate Diploma in Labour Law, a Bachelor of Education (Honours) in Psychology of Education, and a Bachelor of Science with Education. Complementing his academic qualifications, Dr. Letele has undertaken specialized professional training in External Quality Assurance (EQA) and Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) through regional and international quality assurance organizations. He has participated extensively in regional and international forums, workshops, and capacity-building initiatives focusing on institutional quality audits, programme accreditation, national qualifications frameworks (NQFs), and emerging issues such as micro-credentials. He also served on the Steering Committee of the Potential of Micro-Credentials in Southern Africa (PoMiSA) initiative. As President of AfriQAN, Dr. Letele is committed to strengthening collaboration among quality assurance agencies, promoting a culture of quality across African higher education, and supporting the implementation of continental quality assurance initiatives that contribute to the African Union's vision for an integrated, globally competitive, and sustainable higher education system.
